Gov't highlights widespread support for 5 million tree planting initiative

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has revealed that several parties have expressed interest in supporting the Five Million Trees Planting Programme, bringing the total number of trees to be planted under the initiative to 3.1 million.In a social media post, Minister Thoriq stated that several parties were interested in contributing to the programme, noting that a total of 400,000 trees have been planted so far, under this project. The minister expressed confidence in planting over five million trees within the next for years, achieving the primary objective of this initiative. The Five Million Trees Planting Programme was inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on June 5, on the occasion of World Environment Day 2024. This is a significant presidential pledge to plant five million trees across the Maldives. The ministry revealed that a total of 398,000 trees were planted on the first day the programme was launched. A key focus of the programme is the revival of endangered species, with 90 species listed as endangered in the Maldives.
