The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy (MCCEE) has signed an agreement with Ritariworks Pvt Ltd to enhance the data management system for the transport sector.

This is being done through 'Consultancy Services to Enhance Data Management System of the Transport Sector for the preparation of GHG Inventories,' the Ministry said.

The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry, was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Ajwad Musthafa, representing MCCEE, and the Managing Director of Ritariworks, Mr Ahmed Shareef.

This initiative falls under the broader Capacity Building for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Maldives (CBIT Maldives) project. The project operates under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MCCEE and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation (MOTCA), signed on August 12, 2024. CBIT Maldives is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and executed by MCCEE with implementation support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment).

The consultancy aims to establish a robust system for managing transport-related data essential for compiling GHG inventories. Among the deliverables is a secure data-sharing interface, integrated into a newly developed CMS-based website for MOTCA. In addition, the initiative will introduce a Roadworthiness System to collect odometer data, significantly improving the precision and reliability of GHG emissions tracking.

This effort aligns with the Maldives' commitment to the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the Paris Agreement. By systemising data collection and processing, the project seeks to strengthen long-term institutional arrangements, develop standardised indicators and methodologies, and enhance the overall quality of climate-related data.

Improved data management will support the Maldives in monitoring mitigation and adaptation efforts, tracking climate finance, and ensuring compliance with reporting obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The initiative is expected to strengthen national decision-making processes and equip the Maldives to address its climate change challenges more effectively.
