The Maldives Police Service has initiated an inquiry into allegations involving Superintendent of Police Rajunee Shuaib, who leads the Economic Crime Department.
The investigation follows reports on social media suggesting that Rajunee may have obtained a Vinares flat through questionable and potentially improper methods.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan, has confirmed that the authorities are investigating these claims and that efforts are underway to verify their accuracy. He also stated that appropriate measures will be taken depending on the outcome of the inquiry.
The situation gained attention after Rajunee participated in a press conference on Thursday, where he provided details about a separate investigation concerning forged documents related to land acquisitions in Hulhumalé. Following the briefing, criticisms surfaced, and questions arose regarding the legitimacy of Rajunee's own acquisition of a Vinares flat.
As a precautionary measure during the ongoing investigation, Superintendent Rajunee has been temporarily relieved of his responsibilities. His duties have been reassigned to another officer to safeguard the impartiality of the investigation, police confirmed.
This decision to reassign Rajunee’s role is intended to ensure the integrity of the ongoing inquiry into the Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya housing schemes, preventing any undue influence. It has been made clear that this action does not suggest any wrongdoing on Shuaib's part at this stage of the investigation.
The Maldives Police Service has pledged to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, with the goal of addressing the allegations and maintaining public confidence in the process.
