Maldives has welcomed a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution requesting an International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion on Israel's obligations regarding humanitarian assistance to Palestine. The resolution, adopted on December 19, passed with 137 Member States voting in favour.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the resolution, led by Norway and supported by a coalition of states, seeks clarification on Israel's legal obligations concerning the activities of the United Nations, international humanitarian organisations, and third States in Palestinian territories. Maldives joined as a co-sponsor of the initiative.

Maldives views this development as a crucial step in safeguarding humanitarian operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly amid ongoing concerns about access and delivery of aid.

The strong international backing for the resolution demonstrates widespread support for humanitarian principles and international law, and strengthens diplomatic efforts to establish a sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, the Ministry noted.

Throughout its diplomatic history, Maldives has stood firmly behind the Palestinian cause, championing a two-state resolution in line with UN resolutions and international legal frameworks. The nation continues to be an active voice in international platforms, steadfastly defending Palestinian sovereignty and their right to self-determination.
