The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has dismissed 15 staff members following revelations of irregularities in land and flat allocations in Hulhumalé.

The decision comes in the wake of a high-profile case involving the alleged allocation of land to Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, the brother of former HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed.

HDC Chairman Ahmed Nasif confirmed the terminations, explaining that an internal investigation had validated the allegations. He added that stricter controls would be introduced to limit the sharing of location data and the transfer of sensitive information outside the organisation. Nasif noted that any irregularities would need to be identified and addressed within 48 hours, with a review of the corporation's security measures also planned.

Concurrently, the Prosecutor General, Abbas Shareef, has directed the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the matter. The 15 dismissed employees include several senior officials who had been previously suspended during the investigation phase.

Amid the scandal, former Managing Director Fazul tendered his resignation on Saturday, citing the need to ensure an impartial inquiry into the fraudulent activities. Mauroof Jameel has since been appointed to lead the corporation.

Both the police and the ACC continue to probe the allocation procedures, aiming to root out further irregularities and reinforce transparency in Hulhumalé's land and housing distribution processes.
