President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to make bulk purchase of rock boulders to address the acute shortage that has disrupted progress on several major infrastructure projects across the Maldives.

During his visit to Rathafandhoo in Huvadhu Atoll on January 8, the President spoke of the need for timely access to essential construction materials to revitalise delayed land reclamation and harbour development works.

The lack of rock boulders is as a central issue, hindering the construction of structures such as harbours, erosion control systems and the progress of land reclamation as well. This shortage has brought projects in many islands to a standstill, creating widespread delays in delivering much needed developments.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the Government has implemented plans to secure bulk supplies of these materials, supported by funding arrangements designed to expedite procurement.

This initiative aligns with the Administration’s agenda to fulfil its election commitments. President Dr Muizzu has reiterated that the coming years will be dedicated to translating the pledges outlined in his manifesto into tangible outcomes. By addressing material shortages, the Government aims to ensure smoother progress in infrastructure development across the nation.

In tandem with these efforts, significant strides are being made in other development initiatives. The construction of council buildings on 50 islands is advancing under the oversight of the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works. The project, which has now been handed over to a contractor, demonstrates the Government’s focus on improving administrative infrastructure to support local governance.

Underlying all these efforts is the Administration’s commitment to equitable development. The Administration aims to treat all islands fairly, ensuring equal access to resources and opportunities regardless of size or prominence.
