After a prolonged period of stalled progress, residents across the atolls are seeing long-awaited development projects finally take shape in time for Eid celebrations.

For many, the revival of these initiatives brings not just improved infrastructure but a renewed sense of optimism about the future.

Over the past year, several projects were left incomplete or had not even been contracted due to financial constraints and delays inherited before the 2023 elections. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu acknowledged these setbacks, noting that some projects had been stalled for over a year when he took office in November 2023. The slowdown in development left many communities frustrated as essential facilities remained unfinished.

However, 2025 has brought a shift in momentum. In February, the president pledged to restart and initiate key development efforts, and the Government is now making good on that promise. The holy month of Ramadan has also marked the beginning of new infrastructure projects across the atolls. Unlike previous initiatives that were often assigned to private contractors, state-owned companies have been tasked with ensuring the timely completion of these projects.

New Development Projects Underway

The projects span multiple sectors, focusing on healthcare, community infrastructure, and essential services:

  • March 10: WAMCO has begun setting up mining and resource management centres in 32 islands, ensuring better waste management and resource utilisation.
  • March 13: Construction has commenced on new health facilities, including Fodhdhoo Health Centre, Shaviyani Maaungodhoo Health Centre, and Vaavu Felidhoo Hospital. MTCC is also developing Thaa Vilufushi Hospital.
  • Additional healthcare expansions include the construction of Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo Hospital, Alif Dhaalu Maamigili Hospital, and Kulhudhuffushi "Dhamana Veshi," while RDC takes on the Kaafu Gaafaru Health Centre. A new building is also being added to Haa Dhaalu Makunudhoo Health Centre under Fenaka’s management.
  • March 14: Police stations are being built in 75 islands by MTCC, RDC, and Fenaka. Additionally, Fenaka has taken on desilting work in Shaviyani Maaungoodhoo, Shaviyani Narudhoo, and Noonu Lhohi.
  • March 15: Community infrastructure projects include the establishment of football fields in Baa Kamadhoo and Dhaalu Maaenboodhoo, lighting installations at Lhaviyani Kurendhoo Farm, and the construction of indoor badminton courts in Alif Alif Thoddoo.
  • Football fields are also being developed in Kaafu Kaashidhoo, Alif Dhaalu Hanyaameedhoo, and Baa Maalhos. Fenaka is introducing drag brushes for better maintenance in Baa Kendhoo, Baa Dharavandhoo,  Baa Thulhaadhoo, and Raa Meedhoo.
  • March 16: Mining and resource management centres are being upgraded in 75 islands by MTCC, RDC, and Fenaka. Additionally a Mosque with a capacity of 500 people is in the works in Baa Maalhos.
  • March 25: RDC is developing rural areas in Haa Alif Kelaa, while MTCC is constructing the Shaviyani Milandhoo Islamic Centre.
  • March 27: An immigration office is under construction in Haa Alif Uligan.
  • March 29: The Government has assigned MTCC, RDC, and Fenaka to develop healthcare facilities, including four new hospitals in the atolls.

As a new month begins after the end of a festive and progressive Eid-ul-Fitr, residents of the islands are witnessing long-awaited advancements, bringing a newfound sense of hope. For many, the stalled projects were a source of frustration, but the renewed Government efforts have reassured communities that development is back on track.
