President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced infrastructure development plans for North Huvadhu Atoll Maamendhoo, with sewerage system upgrades taking immediate priority amid multiple infrastructure projects.
The development package, announced during the President's Wednesday meeting with residents, encompasses critical projects including road construction, coastal protection, harbour expansion, healthcare improvements and educational facility upgrades.
Coastal protection works will begin immediately, implementing a temporary solution using existing rock boulders while developing a permanent protective mechanism, both with full Government support.
The island's health centre will be upgraded to provide 24-hour service with new laboratory facilities and additional staff, while educational improvements include a new multipurpose hall at the school planned for this year.
Although road development contracts have been finalised, construction will commence only after sewerage system completion. Meanwhile, the harbour will undergo expansion with technical assessments exploring options including a separate bridge structure.
Alongside these essential services, youth and sports facility improvements are also planned, including volleyball court reconstruction, futsal ground renovation and artificial turf installation for the football pitch.
The Government has also committed to addressing the island's waste management challenges as part of this comprehensive development approach.
