Minister for Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Toriq Ibrahim --

Minister for Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Toriq Ibrahim, has departed for Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to attend COP29, the world’s largest environmental summit.

Minister Thoriq, accompanied by senior government officials, highlighted that the Maldives would play an influential role at this year's summit.

At COP29, which runs from November 11-22, the Maldives will organise four key events. These include discussions on renewable energy in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the importance of forest conservation under the theme "Sustainable Coral Reef Management," and a session focusing on climate adaptation for small island states, with the Maldives serving as the Ministerial Champion for this cause.

Ahead of the summit, the Maldives also held a special event to gather youth perspectives on environmental challenges, with a statement prepared to be presented at COP29, amplifying the voices of young people on climate action. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to address the summit, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to advocating for financial support for countries facing climate change impacts.

This year’s COP theme, "In Solidarity for a Green World," reflects the global focus on environmental issues, particularly the role of small island nations in mitigating climate risks. The Maldives continues to advocate for financial assistance to address climate change impacts, ensuring that vulnerable countries receive the support needed for sustainable development and environmental preservation.
