Dr Zahir Hussain receives highest civilian honour

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu conferred Dr Mohamed Zahir Hussain, Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives, with the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (ODRI) — the nation’s highest civilian honour — at the Republic Day function held at Dharubaaruge.

This accolade recognises Dr Zahir Hussain’s nearly five-decade dedication to advancing Maldivian education, leaving an indelible mark on the nation's development.

Dr Zahir Hussain, a graduate of Al-Azhar University in Egypt, began his career at Aminiya School before assuming the role of Minister of Education, where he led groundbreaking initiatives such as establishing the Science Education Centre in 1979 and implementing reforms at the Maldives Education Seminary. His work spearheaded the Basic Education Project, laying the foundation for a robust national education system.

In addition to his contributions in education, Dr Zahir Hussain served as Minister for Youth Development and Sports, as a parliament member, and on the committee responsible for translating the Holy Quran into Dhivehi. He is also a distinguished writer on religion, education, and social issues, earning numerous accolades for his journalism and public service.

Dr Zahir Hussain’s enduring legacy includes his role as Chancellor of the National University of Maldives and currently as Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives, a position he has held since August 2019. His lifelong dedication to education and public service remains a cornerstone of his invaluable contributions to the nation.
