President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday underscored climate resilience and agricultural sustainability as essential for the Maldives' future at the republic Day function held at Dharubaaruge.
Emphasising the urgency of these issues, he announced his forthcoming participation at the COP-29 summit in Azerbaijan, where he will advocate for international support and compensation for the Maldives, a nation especially vulnerable to climate change.
The President highlighted recent efforts to strengthen the country's climate resilience, including a commitment to increase clean energy sources to 33% of national consumption.
He noted that 15 MW of solar power was generated over the past year, with a large-scale 164 MW project currently underway. In addition, the 'Magey Solar Project' has contributed to reforestation efforts, with 400,000 trees planted toward a target of 5 million, aiming to boost the nation’s green spaces and biodiversity.
On the agricultural front, President Dr Muizzu underscored the importance of reducing food dependency through local production. The creation of a dedicated Ministry of Agriculture has allowed the Government to focus on strategic investments that strengthen food security, reduce import reliance, and support self-sufficiency.
The President’s address underscored his Administration’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable growth, with climate action and agricultural resilience positioned as key priorities in securing a sustainable and self-reliant future for the Maldives.
