President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan, to represent the Maldives at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The conference, which runs from 11th to 22nd November 2024, brings together global leaders to advance climate action, with a focus on setting a new financial framework, bolstering international cooperation, and overcoming barriers to achieving Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Upon arrival at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, President Muizzu and his high-level delegation received a warm welcome from senior Azerbaijani officials, highlighting the mutual commitment to climate collaboration and diplomacy.
President Dr Muizzu's arrival in Baku follows an official visit to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he attended the Extraordinary Joint Arab-Islamic Summit. Invited by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, President Muizzu joined other leaders in addressing the crisis of Israeli aggression in Palestine, underscoring the Maldives’ continued solidarity with the Palestinian people.
With COP29 in session, President Dr Muizzu’s participation aims to bring forward the Maldives’ perspectives on climate resilience and environmental sustainability, key issues for the island nation that faces rising sea levels and other climate-related challenges.
