The Prosecutor General’s Office, on Sunday, announced the termination of immunity and cooperation agreements with four individuals implicated in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
The agreements were rescinded due to the suspects' failure to aid in the investigation or assist in recovering the embezzled state funds.
The agreements, which were initially granted to secure cooperation in the probe, have now been annulled for the following suspects:
This decision follows the earlier termination of an immunity agreement with former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath in 2022.
According to a statement from the PG Office, the suspects failed to provide meaningful cooperation in the ongoing investigation or contribute to recovering funds siphoned from the state.
As a result, Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has ordered the Maldives Police Service and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to swiftly resume investigations into the implicated individuals.
The MMPRC corruption scandal, considered one of the largest financial fraud cases in the Maldives’ history, involves the embezzlement of millions of dollars intended for state use.
