At COP29, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu called for a new climate finance goal that aligns with the scale of the crisis, stating, “The need is in trillions, not billions.” He urged increased global financial commitments to support climate adaptation, mitigation, and loss and damage, particularly for vulnerable nations like the Maldives.
Highlighting the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), President Dr Muizzu explained that the lack of finance limits their climate ambitions. He called for a revised climate finance framework that prioritises both immediate needs and long-term resilience, emphasising the Maldives' responsibility to preserve its environment as a “sacred duty.”
The President also reflected on the Maldives’ efforts in sustainability, including a new Energy Policy, green initiatives in food security and housing, and economic diversification. He announced a 20-year strategy for a climate-resilient Maldives by 2040, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to climate action.
In conclusion, President Dr Muizzu urged global leaders to reassess financial priorities, stressing the gap between funds for climate adaptation and other global expenditures. He called for decisive action at COP29, urging leaders to “choose the path that changes lives, not the climate.”
