China's Sinohydro has been awarded a contract to build 1,000 housing units in Baa Eydhafushi, marking a significant step towards resolving tourism sector housing needs. The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the President's Office today.
The development, featuring twelve 15-storey towers, will provide a mix of 672 two-bedroom and 336 three-bedroom flats, specifically designed to accommodate tourism industry workers and their families.
Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldivian Government, emphasising the project's role in creating sustainable communities for the tourism workforce. The development positions Eydhafushi as a key residential hub supporting nearby resort islands, potentially transforming the traditional pattern of worker accommodation in the tourism sector.
The housing complex forms part of the Government's broader vision outlined in the "Dhiveheenge Raajje" Manifesto, which commits to delivering 40,000 housing units nationwide. Speaking at the recent launch of the "Hiyaavehi Financing Programme," President Dr Muizzu highlighted how such developments represent crucial steps in addressing the country's housing challenges whilst supporting its flourishing tourism sector.
