Kudagiri’s lagoon, a site dedicated to tourism, is now home to the Maldives’ first aircraft wreck dive site, ‘Kudagiri Dhoonier Wreck,’ following the submersion of two decommissioned Dornier 228 aircraft from the Air Maldives era.

The dive site was officially launched on Saturday in a collaborative effort between Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim and HDC Managing Director Mohamed Mauroof Jameel were present for the historic submersion.
With the addition of these aircraft, Kudagiri now hosts the Maldives’ only aircraft wreck dive centre, offering divers a rare opportunity to explore a piece of the nation’s aviation history beneath the waves.
HDC, which will oversee the site’s maintenance, chose the name ‘Kudagiri Dhoonier Wreck’ to reflect the Dhivehi word ‘Dhooni’ (bird), symbolising flight. The wreck site is expected to attract both diving enthusiasts and eco-tourists, further boosting Kudagiri’s appeal as a prime underwater attraction.
Before being submerged, the aircraft were fully cleaned and strategically positioned to minimise environmental impact. Concrete weights were attached to keep them stable on the lagoon floor.
To further enhance marine biodiversity and appeal to eco-conscious travellers, HDC has announced plans to undertake coral planting at the site.
