The Government is set to expand its tourism sector by opening more resorts in Haa Dhaalu and Thaa atolls next month, according to Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim.

Tourism has been a key economic driver for the Maldives for over five decades, yet its development has not reached its full potential across all atolls. In response, the Government is formulating separate master plans and marketing strategies for each atoll to promote tourism growth in these regions.

Speaking to local news, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted the Administration’s commitment to boosting tourism. He noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has prioritised the sector, outlining plans in his presidential address to enhance tourism in different parts of the country.

Efforts are currently focused on increasing the number of resorts in atolls with limited tourism infrastructure. Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Thaa Atoll, which currently each have only one operational resort, are among the key areas targeted for development. The minister confirmed that additional resorts are set to begin development next month as part of the Government’s tourism expansion strategy.

The minister emphasised the importance of raising awareness about tourism opportunities in sparsely developed atolls, ensuring that investment is encouraged in these regions. He stated that the Government is working closely to create an environment conducive to investment, which is expected to attract more investors and boost economic activity.

Additionally, the newly amended Tourism Act is anticipated to play a crucial role in this expansion. The minister stated that the legislative changes will facilitate the sector’s growth and help increase tourist arrivals in the Maldives.
