Multiple authorities in the Maldives, including the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), and the Ministry of Social and Family Development, have launched investigations into a Raajje TV programme that mocked autistic children and persons with disabilities, sparking widespread condemnation.

The controversy arose from comments made during Raajje TV’s Kaala Baisa programme, hosted by Hussain Rameez and featuring former Colonel Ahmed Fayaz Ali Riza (Papa Fayaz) and former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla (Mosta). While discussing President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the two guests made ableist remarks, ridiculing children with autism and Down syndrome. The comments, framed as humour, have since faced significant backlash.

HRCM strongly criticised the segment, stating that it demeaned individuals with disabilities and reinforced harmful stereotypes. The commission emphasised that all individuals are entitled to human rights and dignity on equal terms with others in society. It also reminded media outlets to exercise caution in their broadcasts to ensure content does not infringe upon anyone’s rights. Additionally, the commission urged authorities to take appropriate action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Broadcom, which regulates media content in the Maldives, noted potential violations of Article 35 of the Constitution, which guarantees special protection for children, adolescents, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. The commission pledged to take the strictest legal measures if the broadcast is found to have breached broadcasting regulations. It also issued a circular instructing broadcasters to uphold the dignity of all individuals and comply with ethical and legal standards.

Deputy Minister of Social and Family Development Mariyam Lahufa Khaleel condemned the remarks and confirmed that the Ministry is actively addressing the issue, particularly given its widespread circulation on social media.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the public and Government officials. Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed denounced the remarks, stating that such language has no place in political discourse. Former senior Government officials have also called for strict action against those responsible.

The controversy has reignited discussions on responsible broadcasting and the ethical obligations of the media to ensure respect and dignity for all individuals, particularly vulnerable groups. Authorities have assured the public that necessary measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
