As the Maldives celebrates Eid, a poignant reminder echoes across the nation—the preservation of its Islamic identity is a collective responsibility.

The Eid Khuthuba (sermon) delivered across the country today underscored this vital message, urging all Maldivians to remain steadfast in their faith and to ensure that Islamic education is provided to future generations.

On this joyous occasion, the sermon emphasised the importance of dedication to the blessed congregation. It reaffirmed the fundamental principles that define the Maldives as a 100 per cent Islamic country—Islam, brotherhood, freedom, and sovereignty. To uphold these values, it is imperative to pass on the noble teachings of Islam to future generations. The gathering for Eid prayers itself stands as a testament to the unity that binds the Maldivian people together, reflecting harmony among individuals of all ages and social backgrounds. The sermon called upon every individual to cleanse their hearts, to avoid division, and to strive towards the betterment of the nation through faith and solidarity.

The sermon made it clear that the sustenance of the Maldivian Islamic identity depends on providing an Islamic upbringing and education to daughters. Education serves as the foundation upon which faith is nurtured and preserved. By ensuring that Islamic teachings remain central to the educational system, the country can continue to thrive as an Islamic nation, deeply rooted in its religious values.

The sermon further highlighted that Islamic Eids are divinely ordained celebrations. It recalled that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) abolished the pre-Islamic festivals of the Jahiliyyah period, replacing them with two sacred Eids—Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. These celebrations extend beyond moments of joy, serving as opportunities for reflection, gratitude, and spiritual renewal. The sermon urged the people to welcome Eid with honesty and love, to connect with loved ones, to exchange greetings and good wishes, and to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood within the community.

Eid is not merely a time of celebration but also a day to express shared humanity. As Maldivians rejoice, the sermon called upon them to remember their Muslim brothers and sisters across the world who are facing hardship. It encouraged the community to participate in acts of kindness, to extend support to those in distress, and to offer heartfelt prayers for their relief. Furthermore, it stressed the importance of resolving conflicts and fostering peace within society. In times of discord, it is the duty of those in positions of strength to extend a hand to the weak, ensuring that justice and compassion prevail.

The Eid sermon serves as a powerful reminder of the values that define the Maldives as an Islamic nation. By embracing unity, upholding Islamic teachings, and ensuring the education of future generations, the people of the Maldives can continue to preserve their religious identity. As the country celebrates this blessed occasion, may the spirit of Eid inspire kindness, solidarity, and a renewed commitment to faith.
