The Maldives has made significant strides in healthcare over the past few decades, evolving from a nation with just a single hospital in the late 1970s to one with improved medical infrastructure and better health outcomes. However, challenges remain, particularly for residents of remote islands who still struggle to access specialized medical services. The country's unique geography, with its scattered atolls, continues to create disparities in healthcare accessibilities.
To address these concerns, the President pledged to expand healthcare services across the Maldives, aiming to provide high-quality treatment for all citizens and reduce the need for medical travel abroad.
Speaking in the second edition of the Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare beyond Malé, ensuring medical facilities are strengthened in all inhabited islands.
The Government’s efforts include a 75-bed expansion at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), set to be completed by May 2025. The project will include 44 general ward beds, 15 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds, and 14 private rooms. Hulhumalé Hospital has also been upgraded to a tertiary facility, while a new 100-bed tertiary hospital will be developed in Vilimalé with assistance from China. Additionally, specialised hospitals for women and children, cancer treatment, and thalassaemia care are in the pipeline.
President Dr Muizzu emphasised the importance of public health initiatives and environmental healthcare policies to improve overall well-being. Acknowledging the challenges faced by those in remote islands, he reiterated the Government's commitment to bridging healthcare disparities by expanding medical access and reducing reliance on foreign treatment.
The Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast, launched as a public engagement initiative, continues to serve as a platform for governance through consultation, with the President addressing key national concerns and policy plans.
