Former Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, has been ordered to remain in police custody pending trial amid allegations of extorting money from foreign nationals.

Shamaan was arrested on the 12th of last month following a police operation. Authorities confirmed that he was presented before the court after the expiration of his initial remand period.

During a search of his residence, police recovered MVR 257,475, USD 10,000 in cash, various foreign currencies, and electronic equipment. Investigators believe the recovered assets were obtained unlawfully from expatriates.

The allegations stem from an incident on March 12, 2025, when Maldives Immigration conducted a raid targeting a group of foreign workers residing in a property located in Maafannu. The investigation was conducted in violation of immigration laws and without the completion of necessary documentation, according to emerging findings.

Subsequent investigation, however, revealed that all seven foreign nationals apprehended during the raid possessed valid documentation and were residing in accordance with immigration regulations.

According to police reports, three individuals who were not authorised to carry out enforcement actions—employees from Controller's Bureau, Planning, and Media—were the first to arrive at the scene. These individuals are alleged to have carried out the operation improperly.

Further findings indicate that Shamaan had prior knowledge of the raid, raising serious concerns about a potential abuse of power within the Immigration Office.

Shamaan now faces trial as authorities continue to examine the extent of misconduct and possible corruption.
