Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has announced that inmates who have completed their prison sentences or are released on parole will be allowed to vote in jail during the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections, provided they are registered.
According to MCS, eligible individuals who have re-registered for the elections will be able to cast their votes at designated ballot boxes placed in the prisons where they are registered. The arrangement is part of efforts to ensure that voting rights are upheld for all eligible citizens.
The Elections Commission (EC) has facilitated re-registration ahead of the polls, allowing voters to choose alternative locations to cast their ballots instead of their registered islands or residences. This includes provisions for individuals currently held in correctional facilities.
As part of these measures, five ballot boxes will be placed across prison facilities, including two in Maafushi Prison, and one each in Asseyri Prison in Himmafushi, Hulhumalé Prison and Dhoonidhoo Prison.
Voting for the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections and the referendum is scheduled to take place on Saturday, with authorities stating that arrangements have been made to ensure inclusive participation in the electoral process.
