Registration is now open for the "Dhiraagu Malé Open," a national swimming competition jointly organised by Swim Maldives and Dhiraagu.
The announcement was made at a press conference held today by both organisations.
Scheduled for Saturday, 24 May, the event welcomes participants of all ages. According to organisers, children will also be allowed to compete using fins and masks to encourage broader participation.
Speaking at the press conference, President of Swim Maldives, Hussain Shameem, said the event is part of an ongoing partnership between the two organisations, with Dhiraagu aiming to attract more than 300 swimmers.
According to Shameem, Maldives is one of the most accessible countries in the world for sea swimming, with the furthest point from land to sea being only 800 metres. He added that swimming is a skill that everyone, especially children, should learn.
The primary aim of the competition, according to Swim Maldives, is to raise awareness of swimming, encourage more people to learn the skill, and revive the nation’s swimming culture.
Swim Maldives also recalled the success of a similar event held in 2019, which reportedly drew significant public interest.
