Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has said the current building housing the National Drug Agency (NDA) is no longer suitable for delivering its essential services, and that the Government is prepared to secure improved facilities and even construct a new building if needed.
His remarks came after a visit to the Green Building, where NDA operations have been based since 2007. He assessed the facility’s condition and noted that the space was inadequate for the agency’s needs.
The Minister indicated that while many of the agency’s functions are carried out within the Green Building, the layout and limited space make it difficult to provide services effectively. He said the Government is looking into finding an additional building for NDA operations and may rebuild the facility entirely on the same land. He added that any new construction would be pursued with minimal burden to the state budget, potentially through partnerships.
According to the State Minister of Homeland Security and Technology and Chairperson of the NDA, Lubna Zahir, the existing facility is ageing and in poor condition. She explained that the building currently supports a range of critical services, including outpatient treatment, a medication dispensing unit, and assessments for the Drug Court.
Lubna said the facility serves around 3,000 individuals but lacks the space necessary to accommodate these services adequately.
The NDA has been operating from the Green Building for nearly two decades, and no major renovations have been carried out since its establishment. The land on which the building stands is approximately 16,000 square feet.
