President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with senior representatives from TikTok on April 16, 2025 to discuss avenues for collaboration in support of the Maldives’ national digital transformation efforts.

The meeting, held at the President’s Office, followed discussions between TikTok’s delegation and officials from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. Talks focused on strengthening cooperation to advance the Government’s digitisation agenda and expand opportunities for Maldivian creators on the global social media platform.

During the meeting, the President outlined his Administration’s priorities to modernise the country’s economy and digital infrastructure. He emphasised the potential of platforms like TikTok to support creative industries and empower youth through innovation and entrepreneurship. TikTok executives expressed their willingness to work closely with the Government to support these efforts.

Among the key issues discussed was the limited ability of Maldivian creators to monetise their content on TikTok. While the platform’s popularity in the Maldives continues to rise, creators currently have access only to the TikTok Creator Fund and live streaming features for revenue generation. Discussions explored the possibility of enabling access to TikTok’s Creator Marketplace — a tool that connects content creators with brands — for eligible Maldivian users.

The proposed collaboration is expected to open new avenues for creators in the Maldives to earn income from digital content, provided they meet eligibility criteria such as having over 10,000 followers. Officials believe the initiative could play a vital role in strengthening the digital economy and promoting sustainable income generation in the creative sector.

TikTok is one of the world’s leading social media platforms and has become a major player in the global digital economy. The company’s engagement with the Maldives reflects a growing interest in supporting emerging markets and fostering inclusive digital growth across the region.
