Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, stated that the establishment of biosphere reserves and nature parks represents a significant advancement in the protection of biodiversity.
He made these remarks during the High-Level Segment of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The Minister emphasised that creating additional biosphere reserves and nature parks within the country would provide a secure environment for regional species. He acknowledged the numerous challenges small island nations face in this area and highlighted the urgent need for international assistance, noting that insufficient financial resources and technical capacity are major obstacles.
Minister Thoriq stressed that to effectively achieve the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity, collaboration among all nations is essential. He urged developed countries to extend their support to developing nations, promoting collective efforts to safeguard the world's biodiversity.
The Convention on Biological Diversity is one of the most important treaties aimed at protecting and sustainably managing global biodiversity. Meetings held under this Convention will review its implementation and discuss necessary measures for international species protection.
The primary goal of the 16th Conference of the Convention on Biological Diversity is to establish a monitoring system for species conservation efforts and to explore strategies for increasing funding for conservation initiatives. The creation of such a system would facilitate the assessment of progress made by each participating country.
