Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has stated that the Commonwealth has been a steadfast partner in strengthening the Maldives’ economic resilience, particularly through climate finance and climate action initiatives.

The Minister made the remarks in a statement issued to mark Commonwealth Day.

In his message, Dr Khaleel highlighted the theme of this year’s observance, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” noting that it reflects the shared values and common goals of Commonwealth member states.

Minister Dr Khaleel stated that for more than seven decades the Commonwealth has served as a platform for cooperation in an evolving global landscape. He noted that the organisation’s unity and diversity have been key strengths in addressing shared challenges while creating opportunities for sustainable prosperity among member states, regardless of their size.

The Minister also emphasised the significance of the Commonwealth for the Maldives, stating that it has long provided a platform where the voices of small states can be heard and represented. He noted that the organisation has played an important role in advocating for the collective interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Highlighting that the Commonwealth has supported the Maldives in strengthening economic resilience, the Minister added that this has been particularly through initiatives related to climate finance and climate action. He also stressed that cooperation among nations remains especially important for small states during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.

Concluding his message, the Minister reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to the Commonwealth and its work. He stated that the Maldives will continue to play an active role in ensuring the organisation remains responsive to present challenges and contributes to building a resilient and prosperous future for all member states.
