Vaavu Rakeedhoo has achieved a remarkable milestone in renewable energy, now operating generators for just two hours a day while meeting the majority of its electricity needs through solar power and battery storage.

This progress is facilitated by a hybrid PV-BESS-DG (Photovoltaic-Battery Energy Storage System-Diesel Generator) setup, showcasing a sustainable energy model for the Maldives.

Stelco Managing Director Hussain Fahmy highlighted Rakeedhoo’s success as a step forward in the nation's energy transition, crediting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership for driving this initiative.

The system effectively integrates solar energy and battery storage to minimise diesel dependency, cutting carbon emissions and enhancing energy efficiency.

This achievement supports the Maldives' broader objective of generating 33 per cent of its energy from renewable sources. Rakeedhoo's transformation underscores the potential of hybrid energy solutions to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while advancing the country's sustainability agenda.
