A resolution has been submitted to Parliament seeking to clarify the views of Members of Parliament regarding the high electricity and water costs faced by businesses operating outside the Malé region.

The resolution, proposed by South Hulhumalé MP Ahmed Shamheed, highlights the financial burden on small and medium enterprises in the islands, where utility rates are significantly higher than those in the capital.

It draws attention to disparities in utility services between Malé and the islands. The resolution notes that the cost of connecting water in the islands is 57 per cent higher than in Malé, while the cost of relocating water meters is 159 per cent higher.

In terms of electricity consumption, the resolution states that for usage between 301 and 500 units, businesses in the islands pay rates that are 64 per cent higher than those in Malé.

The aim of the resolution is to gather the views of lawmakers on how best to address these challenges faced by businesses in the islands and to promote more equitable access to utility services across the country.
