Japanese special envoy pays courtesy visit to President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu received a courtesy call from Ikuina Akiko, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, on this afternoon at the President’s Office.

During the meeting, both sides reflected on the enduring friendship between the Maldives and Japan, underlining more than five decades of bilateral cooperation and strong people-to-people connections. They discussed opportunities for collaboration in areas such as economic development, infrastructure, disaster resilience and management, telecommunications, and capacity-building.

The President expressed appreciation for the Japanese delegation’s visit to the Maldives to join the Independence Day celebrations. The Special Envoy conveyed her gratitude for the invitation to participate in events marking the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence.

In closing, President Dr Muizzu expressed confidence in further strengthening the relationship between the two nations. The Special Envoy reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to deepening ties and expanding avenues of future cooperation.
