Maldivian political party leaders meet PM Modi to bolster ties

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meetings with leaders from key political parties in the Maldives, signalling continued bipartisan support for the longstanding India-Maldives partnership.
The meetings took place at Kurumba Island Resort, where the Indian Prime Minister is staying during his official visit. Party leaders from across the political spectrum attended, including Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Fayyaz Ismail and Party President Abdulla Shahid. The engagement also included Jumhooree Party (JP) leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) leader and Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, and Maldives National Party (MNP) leader and Maafannu North MP Mohamed Nazim.
The discussions centred around enhancing cooperation and reaffirming the mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. The presence of both ruling and opposition party leaders at the meetings underscored broad political support for closer ties with India, regardless of partisan differences.
In a post shared on X, PM Modi noted that his meeting with leaders of various Maldivian political parties reflected the broad-based support for India-Maldives relations. He highlighted that the participation of leaders across the political spectrum underscored the strength and continuity of the bilateral partnership, which is guided by shared democratic values and mutual respect.
The cross-party engagement took place on sideline of PM Modi’s visit coinciding with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day. It also followed the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between the two countries, aimed at enhancing collaboration in trade, finance, digital development, environmental monitoring, and other sectors.
