A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Nicobar Islands late Monday night, with tremors felt as far as Malé and Hulhumalé; authorities have confirmed there is no threat to the Maldives.

The earthquake occurred at 11:41 p.m. local time in the Nicobar Islands region of India, approximately 2,215 kilometres from Malé. Despite its strength, the Maldives Meteorological Service has assured that the quake poses no danger to the country.

Mild shaking was reported in parts of Malé and Hulhumalé, with the seismic monitoring station at Kaadedhdhoo detecting the earthquake approximately seven minutes after it occurred.

The Meteorological Service confirmed that the country remains unaffected by the earthquake aside from the brief shaking experienced in some areas.

Seismic monitoring stations continue to observe the situation for any potential aftershocks. International seismic agencies, which track such events across the region, have also called for continued vigilance due to the Nicobar Islands’ history of frequent earthquakes.
