The Parliament has urged the public to verify and share information related to parliamentary proceedings responsibly.

Addressing recent social media posts, the Parliament in a statement issued on Monday night, stressed the importance of ensuring the accuracy of any information made public, and called on individuals and institutions to refrain from misrepresenting or misconstruing content disclosed by the Parliament.

The statement follows a rise in online discussions and posts concerning the performance of lawmakers. It reaffirmed that under Article 85 of the Constitution, sessions of Parliament and its committees are, by default, open to the public in order to promote transparency and civic engagement.

The statement said that the aim is to make information about parliamentary work accessible and transparent through regular updates on the Parliament's official website, adding that available data includes bills, resolutions, questions posed to ministers, and statistics from various committees.

However, the Parliament statement highlighted that such disclosures represent only a portion of an MP’s overall responsibilities. In this regard, the Parliament reiterated that most parliamentary work is carried out within committees, and all members participate in these sessions as part of their constitutional duties.

The statement emphasised that assessing an MP’s contribution should not be based solely on the number of bills presented, but also on their involvement in discussions and debates throughout different stages of the legislative process.

As such, the Parliament appealed to the public and media to exercise caution and integrity when interpreting and disseminating parliamentary information, reinforcing the need for accuracy and context in public discourse.
