The Maldives Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad, has stated that research is underway to establish a showroom for the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) in Sri Lanka.
Speaking on PSM News' Raajje Miadhu programme, Ambassador Masood indicated that the initiative also involves plans to include Sri Lankan nationals in operational roles. This includes the potential establishment of a fish processing facility to support local engagement and enhance the distribution of Maldivian fish products.
He highlighted that Maldivian fish, commonly known in Sri Lanka as ‘Umbalakada’, continues to hold a strong reputation among local consumers for its distinctive flavour and quality. However, he acknowledged that despite this reputation, sales of Maldivian fish products in Sri Lanka have declined in recent years.
To address this, the proposed showroom and distribution centre are intended to improve market accessibility and visibility. The Ambassador expressed optimism that the renewed presence of MIFCO in Sri Lanka would help stimulate demand and strengthen trade between the two countries.
In addition to commercial considerations, the Ambassador noted that Sri Lanka has shown growing interest in developing its fisheries sector through knowledge exchange. Of particular interest is the Maldives’ use of pole-and-line fishing, a traditional technique recognised for its sustainable approach and low environmental impact.
This interest has led to discussions between both governments about potential areas of cooperation. The Sri Lankan Fisheries Minister has reportedly expressed a desire to formalise collaboration, with a focus on learning from Maldivian practices and applying them to local industry development.
Such cooperation could be significant, given concerns surrounding Sri Lanka’s current fishing practices. The use of non-selective gear has raised environmental issues, including damage to coral reefs and the risk of overfishing. By adopting more sustainable techniques, similar to those employed in the Maldives, Sri Lanka hopes to address these challenges and improve long-term resource management.
This focus on fisheries also featured during the recent official visit by President Anura Kumara Disanayaka to the Maldives from 28 to 30 July. The visit, held at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, provided an opportunity for Maldivian officials to outline potential areas for investment in Sri Lanka, with the fisheries sector emerging as a promising area of collaboration.
