The Maldives and Germany held official bilateral talks in Berlin as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany.
The discussions were held at Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of the German President, and were led by President Dr Muizzu and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, with senior officials from both Governments in attendance.
The talks focused on strengthening cooperation between the Maldives and Germany, including efforts to expand engagement at both bilateral and multilateral levels through enhanced dialogue and formal cooperation frameworks. Officials discussed opportunities to diversify collaboration across priority areas of mutual interest.
President Dr Muizzu’s visit marks the first official visit by a Maldivian President at the invitation of the President of Germany and coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Maldives and Germany established diplomatic ties on 5 July 1966.
As part of the visit from 9 to 13 February, President Dr Muizzu is scheduled to deliver a lecture at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, highlighting the Maldives’ experience in climate change adaptation. He is also set to speak at the German Council on Foreign Relations, where he will present the Maldives’ perspective on the role of oceans in foreign policy.
