The Parliament of the Maldives has observed a moment of silence in honour of Hassan Sobir, a former Cabinet Minister, diplomat, and recipient of the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin, who passed away on 28 July at the age of 76 following a prolonged illness.
The tribute took place at the opening of a parliamentary session and was held in recognition of Sobir’s more than 38 years of service to the state. His passing was regarded by officials as a significant loss to the nation, given his long-standing contributions to both domestic governance and international diplomacy.
Sobir began his career in public service on 7 February 1973 with the Maldivian Government. One of his earliest roles was with the National Planning Agency. Following the agency’s dissolution, he joined the newly formed Ministry of Planning and Development on 10 November 1982, where he held a number of senior positions.
His work in Government later extended to high-level Cabinet appointments. On 11 November 1993, during President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s fourth term, Sobir was appointed Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture. He subsequently served as Minister of Tourism during the President’s fifth term, overseeing areas central to the country’s economic development.
Beyond his ministerial responsibilities, Sobir represented the Maldives on the international stage. He served as Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Singapore, the European Union, and Japan, contributing to the country’s foreign relations and diplomatic presence abroad.
In the legislative arena, Sobir was elected to the 15th Parliament representing North Ari Atoll and was a member of the Special Assembly of the People’s Majlis. Throughout his career, he remained closely involved in national planning and policy-making, with a consistent focus on the country’s long-term development.
In recognition of his public service, Sobir was awarded the prestigious Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin during the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations. The honour was conferred for his contributions to national development, particularly in the fisheries and tourism sectors during his ministerial tenure, and for his efforts in strengthening the Maldives’ foreign affairs.
Widely respected for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to public service, Hassan Sobir leaves behind a distinguished legacy in Maldivian governance and diplomacy.
