More than 900 containers of goods were cleared between 27 July and 2 August, according to figures from the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).

The shipments comprised 500 units of 20 foot containers and 407 units of 40 foot containers, totalling 1,314 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs).

MPL said the imports included large volumes of essential and perishable goods, which form a significant share of the country’s weekly cargo. Onions and eggs were among the most imported items, alongside a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Perishable goods imported during the week included:

  • 16,988 cartons of eggs
  • 13,096 sacks of onions
  • 7,437 cases of watermelons
  • 5,538 sacks of potatoes
  • 3,888 cases of tomatoes
  •  3,181 cases of pineapples
  • 2,920 cases of cabbage
  • 2,634 cases of bananas
  • 1,177 cases of pumpkins
  • 1,059 cases of sweet melons

The week’s imports followed a temporary suspension of cargo operations caused by adverse weather conditions, which contributed to an onion shortage in the market. With operations now resumed, MPL reported unloading 4,720 sacks of onions on Tuesday and Wednesday night to help replenish supply.
