The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has reassigned the construction of two previously stalled mosque projects to State-owned enterprises to advance religious infrastructure development in the Maldives.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted to complete the mosque in Haa Alifu Muraidhoo, while Road Development Corporation (RDC) will oversee the mosque construction in Gaafu Alifu Gemanafushi.

Each mosque is designed to accommodate 300 worshippers and will include standard facilities such as a prayer hall, minaret, landscaping, and a library. The structures will also be equipped to incorporate solar energy systems.

The construction of both mosques was originally awarded to private companies during the previous administration. However, the projects faced significant delays, with work in Gemanafushi never progressing beyond the planning stage. The construction for the Gemanafushi mosque was started in February 2024, following the change in Administration.

According to the ministry, the Muraidhoo mosque is scheduled to be completed within a year, while the Gemanafushi mosque has a 240-day deadline. The combined project cost is MVR 7.7 million, financed under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP). The ministry also confirmed that 13 mosques are set to open across the Maldives this year, with a further 14 contracts planned for mosque and Islamic centre construction nationwide.
