MPL sees 6% rise in container clearance in July

The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) recorded a 6 per cent increase in container clearances in July compared to the previous month, according to the company’s latest statistics.

MPL cleared a total of 6,320 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in July, up from 5,940 TEUs in June. This included 2,380 20-foot containers and 1,970 40-foot containers.

During the month, port services were provided to 20 conventional vessels and 16 container vessels. Eggs were the most cleared perishable item in July, with 66,000 packages processed, followed by 49,000 packages of onions, 30,000 packages of carrots, 22,000 packages of garlic, and 17,000 packages of tomatoes.

Other goods cleared as general cargo in July included:

  • 12,000 packages of pineapple
  • 11,000 packages of cabbage
  • 10,000 packages of bananas
  • 4,000 packages of pumpkin
  • 3,000 packages of sweet melon

MPL said it continues to take steps to streamline port operations and expedite cargo clearance, noting significant improvements in clearance times compared to last year.
