The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has launched a training programme to prepare farmers who will lead and support greenhouse-based agricultural activities in the islands.

The initiative began at the Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Centre as part of the Maldives Agribusiness Programme, a joint effort between the Government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Conducted across 26 islands in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, and Baa atolls, the training involves 28 participants - 18 farmers and field staff, and will be held in two phases: the first from 10 to 17 August, and the second from 25 to 30 August.

According to the Ministry, the role of these farmers is to ensure that planting in both greenhouses and open fields follows best agricultural practices, including adhering to crop calendars and maintaining quality checks. They will also monitor daily operations, identify areas for improvement, and work with the Ministry extension staff to provide guidance to local farmers.

Greenhouses have already been established in 12 islands in to promote eco-friendly, sustainable farming methods. The Ministry said the new programme will help maintain these standards while fostering collaboration among farming communities.
