Nine candidates apply for High Court judge vacancy

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has confirmed that nine individuals have applied for the vacant High Court judge position, following the withdrawal of former Deputy Home Minister Mohammad Shahid. 

The list of applicants includes: 

·  Ibrahim Nasih of Lhaviyani Kurendhoo 

·  Ibrahim Mahir of Raa Alifushi 

·  Sulaiman Mohamed of Lhaviyani Kurendhoo 

·  Hassan Faheem Ibrahim of Haa Dhaalu Makunudhoo 

·  Ummu Kulsoom Abubakr of Baa Hithadhoo

·  Ali Naseer of Baa Kihaddhoo

·  Mohamed Ibrahim of Gaafu Alifu Kondey

·  Mohammad Zahid of Raa Hulhudhoo

·  Ashfaq Naeeem of Faafu Nilandhoo

The vacancy arose after Shahid withdrew his nomination amid public criticism, informing the JSC that he did not wish to take up the position.

Under JSC regulations, candidates for High Court judge must be at least 25 years old, hold a degree in law or Islamic Sharia, and have a minimum of five years’ experience as a judge or legal practitioner. The successful candidate will be appointed following interviews and evaluations conducted by the JSC in accordance with constitutional procedures.
