Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced that the Zakat Scholarships for higher education, both in the Maldives and abroad, will be awarded on Saturday.

This marks the first time in seven years that Zakat scholarships have been awarded, and, according to the Minister, it is also the first time a significant number of scholarships will be granted in religious disciplines.

Scholarship applications opened in April and closed on 29 May. The Ministry received 29 applications in total — 18 for the Zakat Scholarship and 11 for the Ministry’s Special Scholarship.

The Zakat Fund has allocated 50 scholarship opportunities for higher education, 20 for study within the Maldives, and 30 for study abroad.

Overseas scholarships include opportunities in Malaysia, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and SAARC countries, with 17 slots specifically designated for study in Malaysia and Brunei.
