Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel says the Maldives’ foreign policy enjoys strong global acceptance, particularly among Arab and Islamic nations.

Responding to a question from a member of Parliament on Tuesday, Minister Dr Khaleel stated that although the Maldives is a small country, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu places great emphasis on shaping foreign policy in line with the wishes of the people. He noted that this approach has strengthened relations with Arab and Islamic countries.

The minister further stated that the international community recognises the Maldives as one of the most active voices on the Palestinian issue. He added that, as a result of the country’s foreign policy, many western nations have also begun to take a stronger stance in support of Palestine.

Minister Dr Khaleel added that the policy has also had positive effects on tourism, with an increase in arrivals from various Islamic countries.

The Maldives has consistently voiced strong support for Palestine in international forums, condemning Israeli actions in Gaza and advocating for an immediate ceasefire. The Government has co-sponsored resolutions at the United Nations, called for accountability for war crimes, and actively engaged with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to rally support for Palestinian rights. President Dr Muizzu has continuously reiterated that the Maldives will continue to stand firmly with Palestine “until it achieves full statehood with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
