FitsAir has successfully transitioned its operations to Terminal 1, the newly developed passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), becoming the first Sri Lankan airline to move from the existing terminal facility.
The milestone was celebrated with a special ceremony at Terminal 1, attended by senior officials from the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), FitsAir, and the Maldives tourism sector. Distinguished guests included MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed; MACL Deputy Managing Directors Mujtaba Lateef and Mohammed Lam’aan; Visit Maldives Corporation CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree; Fits Holidays Director Anah Kassim; and FitsAir Operations Executive Ibrahim Ameen Hassan Manik.
The ceremony featured the official opening of FitsAir’s check-in counters, with departing passengers receiving special welcome gifts. The airline’s inaugural departure from the new terminal was commemorated with a ceremonial water salute, while 154 arriving passengers were greeted with traditional Maldivian hospitality and cultural performances.
FitsAir, Sri Lanka’s largest private airline, launched scheduled passenger services to the Maldives in 2022. Its relocation to Terminal 1 is part of the broader operational expansion programme of VIA’s new passenger terminal.
Terminal 1 already hosts the Maldives’ national carrier Maldivian, the UAE’s low-cost airline Air Arabia, and the luxury airline Beond. According to MACL, the company’s objective is to deliver the highest-quality, most comprehensive services to all airlines operating in the Maldives.
The successful integration of national, budget, and premium carriers at Terminal 1 demonstrates the terminal’s versatility and world-class capabilities, reinforcing VIA’s position as a leading aviation hub in the region.
