Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has emphasised that research is indispensable for shaping resilient and sustainable societies, describing it as particularly critical for small island nations such as the Maldives.

He made the remarks on 19 August at the opening of The Maldives National University’s (MNU) Theveli International Conference 2025. In his address, the Minister said research pushes the boundaries of knowledge, provides solutions to complex challenges, and ensures foresight in decision-making. Without it, he warned, nations risk being reactive rather than proactive.

Minister Dr Khaleel highlighted that a revival of research culture allows the Maldives to articulate its challenges to the global community from its own perspective, ensuring that the country’s voice is heard. He noted that such efforts are vital to tackling issues such as climate change, economic recovery, and public health resilience, while preserving a uniquely Maldivian approach.

Underscoring the role of research in policymaking, the Minister said the National Research Council continues to prioritise evidence-based decisions. He added that the Government attaches high importance to integrating research into policy and is committed to expanding grants for researchers working in priority fields. These include climate adaptation, renewable energy, sustainable tourism, digital innovation, and social development.

He further welcomed the strong international participation at this year’s conference, saying their engagement enriches the dialogue by bringing diverse perspectives to local challenges. He stressed that complex global issues require knowledge-sharing and collective effort, noting that collaboration between nations and institutions is central to achieving lasting solutions.
