President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated key development projects in Alifu Alifu Thoddoo, including the water and sewerage services, expansion of school facilities, and the construction of a seaplane platform.

At a ceremony held on 20 August, during his visit to the island, President Dr Muizzu officially inaugurated the island’s new water and sanitation system. The project, contracted to Kalpatharu Projects International Limited under India’s Exim Bank line of credit, cost MVR 29.7 million. It includes a sewage pump station, sea outfall, and catchpit to connect households and buildings to the sewer system.

Alongside the inauguration, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was officially contracted to construct a platform on the southern side of Thoddoo. The agreement was signed by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muttalib and MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee. The project will feature a 430-metre jetty, a six-metre-wide platform, and a 70-metre geobag revetment, with an estimated cost of MVR 52 million.

In the education sector, Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has been contracted with building ten new classrooms and additional facilities for Thoddoo School. The agreement was signed by the Minister of Education Dr Islamil Shafeeu and FDC Deputy Managing Director, aiming to address capacity constraints faced by the growing student population.

Thoddoo, with a population of over 2,000 residents and more than 50 guesthouses, has become a hub for local tourism, hosting around 700 workers from outside the island. The Government has said these projects are designed to enhance infrastructure, improve public services, and strengthen the island’s role in the tourism economy.
