Alifu Alifu Thoddoo has taken centre stage as more than a hundred players from 18 countries compete in the Thoddoo Masters Table Tennis Tournament.

The tournament, open to athletes aged 40 and above, is being contested across six age categories, including over-70s. Matches will feature singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, with games held at Thoddoo School. Countries represented include India, Russia, China, Germany, Spain, New Zealand and the United States, making this the first time such a diverse roster has competed in the atolls.

Inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the event was described by Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu as a privilege for the Ministry to support. The Minister said the tournament serves as proof that international competitions can be successfully hosted not only in Malé but also in the islands, highlighting Thoddoo as an example.

He noted that, while Maldivian athletes once had to travel abroad for such tournaments, events are now being brought into local communities. He added that this aligns with the Government’s sports policy, which emphasises nationwide engagement and opportunities across rural islands.

Minister Rafiu also credited IHAA Academy and Thoddoo Local Authority Company for making the Masters TT Tournament possible and expressed gratitude to President Dr Muizzu for his presence, calling it a reflection of his commitment to developing sports. He confirmed that plans are underway to establish a dedicated table tennis hall in the Maldives to further strengthen the sport.
