The Government has awarded contracts to three companies to establish waste management centres in four islands to strengthen solid waste management across residential communities.
The projects, financed under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) aid and the Greater Malé Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project, aim to provide sustainable solutions to tackle waste in local islands.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, Wee Hour Investments Private Limited will develop centres in Kaafu Thulusdhoo and Maafushi at a cost of MVR 5.8 million. Sunny Land Investment Private Limited has been awarded the project in Alifu Dhaalu Mahibadhoo for MVR 4.2 million, with a completion target of 120 days. Meanwhile, Elite International Private Limited will set up a facility in Alifu Dhaalu Hangnameedhoo, valued at MVR 4.6 million, to be completed within 150 days.
The agreements were signed at a ceremony held at the Saafu Raajje Building, where State Minister Mohamed Faaiz signed on behalf of the Government. Company representatives signed the agreements on behalf of the awarded contractors.
The Ministry noted that these projects are another step towards improving environmental protection measures in the islands. Equipment including waste collection vehicles, shredders, and wood chippers has already been delivered to the designated islands to support initial operations.
