The nisab, or minimum wealth threshold for Zakat al-Mal in the Maldives, has been revised to MVR 11,191.95 as of 21 August 2025.

The change reflects fluctuations in the global silver market, with the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) reporting silver at MVR 18.81 per gram. The nisab was previously set at MVR 9,264.15 in April last year, meaning the latest update represents an increase of 20.8 per cent.

Zakat al-Mal, one of the five pillars of Islam, obligates eligible Muslims to contribute a portion of their wealth annually to those entitled to receive it. If an individual’s wealth meets or exceeds the nisab and remains above this threshold for a full year, they are required to pay 2.5 per cent of it annually as zakat.
