Maldives’ State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced that scheduled power cuts will take place in Malé and Hulhumalé on 23 August due to essential maintenance work at the 50MW power plant in Hulhumalé.
According to the company, the plant will be shut down between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to facilitate necessary works aimed at strengthening electricity supply across the capital region. During this period, controlled load shedding will be implemented, with each affected area expected to experience outages of approximately one hour.
STELCO assured that critical infrastructure, including hospitals and other essential service providers, will remain unaffected. The company emphasised that the works are part of preventive measures to prepare for growing electricity demand in line with population expansion.
The company further explained that shutting down all six generators at the Hulhumalé power plant is necessary to carry out the maintenance, resulting in a temporary loss of 50MW from the grid. He noted that the load shedding would be staggered and that customers will be notified in advance of affected times and areas.
